2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf rankings, best expert picks: Fade Dustin Johnson, back Sungjae Im

The 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge is shaping up to be the year’s most anticipated tournament, and not just because of its star-studded field. Instead, the tournament marks the PGA Tour’s return from the coronavirus-related shutdown. Fans won’t be allowed at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth when the tournament begins on Thursday, June 11, but millions will be watching as world No. 1 Rory McIlroy tries to beat an elite 144-player Charles Schwab Challenge field.

McIlory, the two-time FedExCup champion, is favored at Colonial after notching 12 top-10 finishes in his last 14 starts, but who else should be atop your 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf rankings? Jordan Spieth ranks 156th in scoring average this year, but he typically dominates Colonial. He won there in 2016, finished second in 2015 and 2017, and came in eighth last season. Is he among the Fantasy golf sleepers should you target? And which Fantasy golf picks can lead you to a title? Before finalizing any lineups, check out the latest Fantasy golf rankings from data scientist Rick Gehman

With his expansive database of golf statistics, course data and betting odds, Gehman creates advanced models and back-tests them constantly. These models produced 10 outright winners in the past year, including 50-1 Chez Reavie at the Travelers and 40-1 Patrick Reed at the Northern Trust among eight PGA Tour winners, plus a $10,000 DraftKings win at the Masters

At the WGC-Mexico Championship last month, four of Gehman’s top six golfers finished tied for sixth or better. Then at the Honda Classic, Gehman was higher than many on Sungjae Im, ranking him eighth, and the 21-year-old South Korean earned his first PGA Tour victory. Gehman’s No. 2 golfer, Tommy Fleetwood, finished third.

Now Gehman, co-host of “The First Cut” podcast on CBS Sports, has revealed his top 30 players for the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge over at SportsLine so you can crush your Fantasy golf leagues.

2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf picks

For the Charles Schwab Challenge 2020, Gehman is all over Sunjae Im, who comes in leading the FedEx Cup points race, ahead of Thomas and McIlory. The PGA Tour’s reigning Rookie of the Year began the Florida swing with a win and a third-place finish, and he fired a 69 in the Players Championship’s first round before the Tour shut down. Gehman doesn’t think the layoff will hurt Im.

However, Gehman is fading Dustin Johnson even though he’s one of the Vegas favorites. Johnson finished 48th, 10th and 32nd in his last three starts, and he enters ranked just 184th in birdie average. Gehman says Johnson won’t crack the top 10 at Colonial.
