2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf rankings, expert picks: Avoid Dustin Johnson, back Sungjae Im

Golf is back, and it’s for real this time. After a pair of made-for-TV events to raise money for coronavirus relief, an impressive field will tee off in the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge on Thursday, June 11 at Colonial Country Club. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and No. 5 Dustin Johnson participated in those charity matchups, but this is the first PGA Tour event since the Players Championship was cancelled on March 12. Which golfers should you back with your 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf rankings?

McIlroy, who had been playing the best golf on Tour before the hiatus, joins Johnson, world No. 2 Jon Rahm, No. 3 Brooks Koepka and No. 4 Justin Thomas among the players entered. Also in the mix are golfers from the top of the FedEx Cup standings in Sungjae Im (No. 1), Brendon Todd (No. 4) and Webb Simpson (No. 5). Who deserves a spot among your 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf picks? And which Fantasy golf sleepers should you target? Before finalizing any lineups, check out the latest Fantasy golf rankings from data scientist Rick Gehman

With his expansive database of golf statistics, course data and betting odds, Gehman creates advanced models and back-tests them constantly. These models produced 10 outright winners in the past year, including 50-1 Chez Reavie at the Travelers and 40-1 Patrick Reed at the Northern Trust among eight PGA Tour winners, plus a $10,000 DraftKings win at the Masters

At the WGC-Mexico Championship last month, four of Gehman’s top six golfers finished tied for sixth or better. Then at the Honda Classic, Gehman was higher than many on Sungjae Im, ranking him eighth, and the 21-year-old South Korean earned his first PGA Tour victory. Gehman’s No. 2 golfer, Tommy Fleetwood, finished third.

Now Gehman, co-host of “The First Cut” podcast on CBS Sports, has revealed his top 30 players for the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge over at SportsLine so you can crush your Fantasy golf leagues.

2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf picks

For the Charles Schwab Challenge 2020, Gehman loves what he has seen from Sungjae Im, who leads Justin Thomas by 55 points in the FedEx Cup rankings entering the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge. The South Korean won the Honda Classic and was third at the Arnold Palmer before the disruption, shooting 70 or better in five of those eight rounds. The 22-year-old is 12th on Tour in total shots gained, 16th in putts per round, and leads all golfers in total birdies.

However, Gehman is fading Dustin Johnson even though he’s one of the Vegas favorites. The 35-year-old has struggled at times since minor knee surgery in September and has finished outside the top 30 in two of the past three events. He is 164th on Tour in greens in regulation and his putter has been spotty. He doesn’t even merit a spot in Gehman’s top 10, so you’ll want to stay away from him in your Fantasy golf rankings this week.

How to set your 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Fantasy golf rankings

Gehman also is high on a player who’s coming off multiple disastrous performances and hasn’t won in 18 months. This overlooked pro just made a monumental change, has a strong track record at Colonial, and is poised for a huge bounce-back performance.
