2020 Charles Schwab Challenge odds: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from proven model that nailed six majors

Colonial Country Club has been a fixture in professional golf since 1946 and on Thursday, June 11, the historic venue will welcome back the PGA Tour from a more than three-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge will feature the top five golfers in the world plus past champions like Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson. Mickelson didn’t play well in The Match: Champions for Charity, but he’s a two-time winner at Colonial and getting back to familiar territory could help jump-start his bid to make the next Ryder Cup team.

Spieth (55-1), Mickelson (100-1) and Johnson (150-1) are all long shots in the latest 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge odds. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy is the 15-2 favorite on the PGA Tour odds board with four worldwide wins and a staggering 17 top-five finishes since the start of 2019. Before locking in any 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge picks of your own or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like FanDuel and DraftKings, be sure to check out the predictions and projected leaderboard from the team at SportsLine.

SportsLine’s prediction model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has nailed two of the last three majors entering the weekend. It predicted Gary Woodland’s first career major championship at the U.S. Open even though he wasn’t the favorite entering the weekend. The result: Woodland held off a late charge from Brooks Koepka and won by three strokes. The model also called Koepka’s historic victory at the 2019 PGA Championship, predicting he’d hold his lead in the home stretch.

In all, their advanced computer model has nailed a whopping six majors entering the weekend. And already this season, the model called Justin Thomas (15-2) winning the CJ Cup, Rory McIlroy (11-2) taking down the WGC-HSBC Champions and Viktor Hovland (11-1) earning his first career PGA Tour victory at the Puerto Rico Open. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now that the Charles Schwab Challenge 2020 field is locked, SportsLine simulated the event 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the full projected leaderboard.

The model’s top 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge predictions

One huge shocker the model is calling for: Webb Simpson, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top Vegas favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five.

Simpson was red-hot before the coronavirus pandemic forced the PGA Tour to take a three-month hiatus. In fact, the 34-year-old finished in the top 10 in five of his first six starts this season, which included a victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

However, Simpson struggled mightily in his last start at this event, missing the cut at Colonial in 2018. Plus, he enters the Charles Schwab 2020 ranked 149th in strokes gained off the tee (-.130), which doesn’t bode well for his chances in a tournament where the winner has posted a score of 12 under par or better in four of the past five years. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in this loaded field.

Another surprise: Dustin Johnson, a 28-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

The former world No. 1 now has an Official World Golf Ranking of No. 5 after struggling through the FedEx Cup Playoffs last season, but he managed three top-10s in five 2020 starts before the coronavirus pandemic struck. He also participated in competitive golf last month at the TaylorMade Driving Relief, where he teamed with Rory McIlroy to beat Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff.

This will be Johnson’s first appearance at Colonial Country Club since 2014, but he finished 14th that week and made the cut in his only other appearance there in 2008. Johnson is one of the straightest and longest drivers on the PGA Tour and the narrow driving corridors of Colonial should suit his eye well.

How to make 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge picks

Also, the model says five other golfers with odds of 22-1 or longer will make a strong run at the title, including a massive long shot who’s higher than 30-1. Anyone who backs these underdogs could hit it big. You can only see them here.
