2020 Charles Schwab Challenge odds: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from top model that nailed six majors

The PGA Tour is back after a three-month layoff starting on Thursday, June 11 with the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge. Historic Colonial Country Club, known as Hogan’s Alley because Ben Hogan won there five times, is the site of the tournament, the longest running non-major tour event held at the same site. The 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge field is stocked with superstars, including past winners Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson, as well as 17 of the top 20 players in the FedEx Cup standings.

Rory McIlroy, the top-ranked player in the world and reigning FedEx Cup champ, makes his debut at Colonial and is listed at 15-2 in the latest 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge odds. World No. 2 Jon Rahm leads the betting favorites at 9-1. Before locking in any 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge picks of your own or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like FanDuel and DraftKings, be sure to check out the predictions and projected leaderboard from the team at SportsLine.

SportsLine’s prediction model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has nailed two of the last three majors entering the weekend. It predicted Gary Woodland’s first career major championship at the U.S. Open even though he wasn’t the favorite entering the weekend. The result: Woodland held off a late charge from Brooks Koepka and won by three strokes. The model also called Koepka’s historic victory at the 2019 PGA Championship, predicting he’d hold his lead in the home stretch.

In all, their advanced computer model has nailed a whopping six majors entering the weekend. And already this season, the model called Justin Thomas (15-2) winning the CJ Cup, Rory McIlroy (11-2) taking down the WGC-HSBC Champions and Viktor Hovland (11-1) earning his first career PGA Tour victory at the Puerto Rico Open. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now that the Charles Schwab Challenge 2020 field is locked, SportsLine simulated the event 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the full projected leaderboard.

One huge shocker the model is calling for: Webb Simpson, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top Vegas favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five.

Simpson was red-hot before the coronavirus pandemic forced the PGA Tour to take a three-month hiatus. In fact, the 34-year-old finished in the top 10 in five of his first six starts this season, which included a victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

However, Simpson struggled mightily in his last start at this event, missing the cut at Colonial in 2018. Plus, he enters the Charles Schwab 2020 ranked 149th in strokes gained off the tee (-.130), which doesn’t bode well for his chances in a tournament where the winner has posted a score of 12 under par or better in four of the past five years. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in this loaded field.

Another surprise: Xander Schauffele, a 22-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

The 12th-ranked player in the world, Schauffele has four victories already on his young PGA Tour resume. Schauffele’s season in 2018-19 was an impressive one, as he captured the WGC-HSBC Champions and Sentry Tournament of Champions, and finished in a tie for second at the Masters.

Hitting greens in regulation at the narrow Colonial Country Club track will be a priority, and few do it better than Schauffele, who ranks ninth on Tour by hitting 72.2 percent. With a scoring average this season of 69.559, Schauffele is capable of going low every time he tees it up. At age 26 and with all the skills necessary to contend at Colonial, the model sees Schauffele excelling. Include him as part of your 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge bets.

How to make 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge picks

Also, the model says five other golfers with odds of 22-1 or longer will make a strong run at the title, including a massive long shot who’s higher than 30-1. Anyone who backs these underdogs could hit it big. You can only see them here.
