Alabama football recruiting: Four-star safety Kaine Williams commits to Crimson Tide

Nick Saban has made Alabama’s defense the benchmark for all college programs to reach during his time in Tuscaloosa, and he got a commitment from another high-profile prospect on Friday. Kaine Williams, a four-star safety from John Ehret High School in Marrero, Louisiana, committed to the Crimson Tide over LSU, Texas A&M and others.

Williams, the No. 141 player in the nation and fifth-ranked safety in the Class of 2021, is a 6-foot-2, 205-pounder who has 123 tackles and 10 interceptions in two high school seasons. He is a good fit for an Alabama defense that makes great use of big-bodied defensive backs who aren’t afraid to help out in the running game. His size and strength should make him an immediate impact player when he arrives on campus in Tuscaloosa.

Gabe Brooks, midlands recruiting analyst for 247Sports, provided this scouting report on Williams.

“Big-framed safety with good height and bulk relative to the position,” Brooks wrote. “Owns virtually college-ready size at safety and could grow into hybrid player or true off-line linebacker. Rangy at the back end and instinctive in coverage. Big production as a sophomore with six INT’s. Dipped slightly as a junior but still good production. Has consistently shown good ball skills, as evidenced by 10 INT’s in two seasons. Willing participant against the run with encouraging pursuit ability and closing speed. Generally delivers some pop upon arrival. Needs to improve consistency with tackling technique as he sometimes hunts for the big hit. Takes chances as a tackler. Athleticism lacks context. No verified 40 or track times. Owns free safety traits but frame could dictate a move closer to the line of scrimmage. May ideally be a scheme fit. Talented back seven prospect who projects to Power Five level possible long-term NFL Draft ceiling.”

Williams is only the fifth commitment in Alabama’s 2021 class and the lone defensive back of the group. His pledge vaults the Crimson Tide from No. 49 to No. 40 in the 247Sports composite.
