Felipe Vazquez, suspended Pirates pitcher, faces new child porn charge in St. Louis

Suspended Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Felipe Vazquez is facing an additional child pornography charge in St. Louis to go along with over 20 other charges from Florida prosecutors. On Thursday, St. Louis authorities confirmed that Vazquez had been charged with furnishing pornographic materials to a juvenile in February after sending pornographic photos to a minor there last summer, according to Rich Cholodofsky of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. That charge is a Class A misdemeanor in Missouri.

The records show that the alleged crime took place on July 16 while the Pirates were in town to play the St. Louis Cardinals. Vasquez allegedly sent photos to a 15-year girl, who used to live in Westmoreland County in Pennsylvania.

“On that day, the defendant sent multiple photographs of himself in a state of undress,” the court records explained, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Vazquez has been held in Westmoreland County Prison since last September without bail after being arrested for allegedly sending explicit photos to, soliciting sex from, and engaging in sexual activity with an underage female. Florida prosecutors originally wanted Vazquez extradited to the state, but Westmoreland County judge Rita Hathaway denied that request and wants the pitcher to remain in Westmoreland County until the charges are dealt with.

Westmoreland County Assistant District Attorney Jim Lazar believes that the victim in both the Florida and St. Louis cases is the same.

Florida prosecutors filed 21 new charges against Vazquez in November. The charges were brought up after investigators found child pornography on an iPhone XS and an Apple MacBook Pro that were owned by Vazquez. Of the 21 charges, 20 were related to child pornography. The other one was from unlawful conduct with a minor.

Earlier this week, Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Mears denied a defense request for bond that would release Vazquez until he stands trial. An initial hearing is scheduled for June 23.

Vazquez was immediately suspended following his arrest in September. Over the past four seasons with the Pirates, Vazquez has registered 89 saves and recorded 306 strikeouts.
