Hope Solo’s dog dies days after being shot in the leg: ‘We’re brokenhearted’

Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion Hope Solo posted on social media Friday that her dog Conan was in critical condition after being shot. Solo has since posted an update announcing Conan died from blood loss over the weekend.

She wrote on Instagram that her and her husband, former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens, are “brokenhearted” and “crushed” over the dog’s death:

“We’re brokenhearted to share that Conan passed away from blood loss last night. He fought up until the very end. We’re crushed. Just a dog running through the woods, trying to make his way home. We bought our 60-acres so our dogs have space to run and live their most full lives. Conan was kind and loving. He wandered 30 yards off our property when he was shot. As animal lovers we are struggling to make sense of anyone using their right to own guns to shoot pets of any kind. We have had pets come onto our property and always helped them get home safe.”

The dog was taken to Wilkes Veterinary Hospital to be treated after it was shot. Solo and Stevens own a 60-acre farm in North Carolina, but Conan had run “30 yards” away from their land at the time of the incident, according to Solo.

Solo has posted many photos of her dogs on Instagram over the years and they have even appeared in Elle Magazine.

In a 2015 interview with People magazine, Solo talked about why her and Stevens own Dobermans.

“Jerramy always says, ‘Dobermans remind me of you. They’re loyal, regal and people are scared of them,'” Solo said. “But they wouldn’t hurt a fly and Sasha is pretty much scared of everything.”

Solo did not share any information on who may have shot the dog.

The goalkeeper won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. In 2015 she won the World Cup. In March of this year, Solo and Stevens welcomed twins, a boy and a girl.
