Samson: How Texas teams would sell tickets with 25 percent capacity restrictions in place during COVID-19

On Thursday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that the state will allow professional sports leagues to return to play in June as the Lone Star State attempts to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, Abbott revealed that outdoor stadiums can host fans up to their 25 percent normal capacity.

In coordination with the revised order, leagues will have to apply with Texas health officials to be allowed to have fans, and this only applies to outdoor venues — indoor venues still aren’t allowed to have fans in attendance.

In Friday’s installment of “Nothing Personal with David Samson,” David Samson mapped out how the process of dealing with season ticket holders at 25 percent capacity would work, and it could get pretty complicated.

“So we would make a manifest, give it to the ticket department and computer and analytics people, and we would split up the stadium into these groups with different numbers in them,” Samson said. “Then we’d have to go into each season ticket account and decide how many tickets are in that account. Then we’d have to call them and tell them ‘you used to be in Section X, Row 5, Seats 2 & 3. Now you’re moving to Section X, Row 20, Seat 4 & 8. You’d have to do some sort of 3D imaging where you can actually go and look at your seat. Then you’d have to decide the price of that seat. Is that the price that the person is already paying? Do they get a refund or a credit for 2021? It sounds crazy, but these are real issues.”

Texas also has set up guidelines that the leagues have to follow, including recommending that fans and employees adhere to social distancing rules and stay at least six feet apart from anyone that doesn’t reside in their household. In addition, fans will have to take more drastic measures such as using masks and sanitizing their hands on a frequent basis.

There’s going to be plenty of hurdles before fans are allowed to return to the ballpark. Ticket departments for each team will be very busy if fans actually are allowed to come back at some point this summer.
