UFC divisional rankings: Glover Teixeira and Alistair Overeem jump up the ranks after impressive wins

With a rare Wednesday UFC event followed by UFC on ESPN 8 this past Saturday, there have been a few changes to the CBS Sports UFC Divisional Rankings. The biggest change came with the light heavyweight main event on Wednesday, with Glover Teixeira destroying Anthony Smith, knocking out his teeth and scoring a late stoppage.

With his victory, Teixeira jumped from No. 8 to No. 6 at light heavyweight. Smith, on the other hand, dropped from his No. 5 spot to No. 8, and likely saw the last chance at a title shot go down with him.

In Saturday’s main event, ranked heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris stepped into the Octagon. Overeem had to survive a scary first round that saw him nearly stopped before turning the tables and eventually scoring a second-round TKO. With the win, Overeem jumped from No. 10 to No. 8. Harris dropped one spot from No. 8 to No. 9.

The only other change of note was Angela Hill entering the rankings at women’s strawweight despite losing to No. 5 Claudia Gadelha — who held steady in the rankings. Hill enters the rankings at No. 10 after what many feel was a robbery on the judges’ scorecards.

The UFC is on a short break while they explore options for venues for their next event during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
